In the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon, a unique collaboration is breathing new life into the preservation of river ecosystems and their biodiversity. This partnership, between Cornell researchers and indigenous communities, is a testament to the power of combining traditional and scientific knowledge. Isabella Marie Errigo, a doctoral student in natural resources and the environment, has been at the forefront of this initiative, working in Ecuador since 2019. Her journey began at a festival celebrating the Jondachi River, where she met kayakers dedicated to conserving the country's natural resources. This encounter sparked a shared vision, leading to a collaboration with two indigenous Kichwa-led organizations: Yaku Churi and Piatua Resiste.
What makes this partnership truly remarkable is the integration of eDNA sampling with indigenous expertise. Errigo and her partners spent three months collecting eDNA samples from 60 sites along four major rivers and their tributaries. The kayaking skills of the indigenous partners were instrumental in reaching remote, pristine areas that Errigo could not access alone. They also sampled rivers near cities, where human waste and other contaminants pose significant threats. Additionally, they explored areas upstream and downstream of gold mining sites, which have devastating environmental impacts, including deforestation, increased flooding, soil erosion, and mercury release.
The eDNA samples are being analyzed to assess fish and aquatic insect communities, providing critical insights into the health of the river ecosystems. By comparing contaminated and less-impacted sites, Errigo aims to understand the extent of environmental damage and the potential consequences of continued degradation. This research is not just about scientific discovery; it's about empowering indigenous communities to advocate for policies that protect their rivers. Errigo believes that knowledge is power, and science can inform decision-makers and communities, supporting their fight for the environment.
