The Sydney Metro's long-awaited extension is finally nearing completion, with test runs between Tallawong and Bankstown marking a significant milestone. This $30 billion project, which has been in the works for years, is set to revolutionize public transport in the city. With the line now handed over to its operator, Metro Trains Sydney, the focus shifts to the final stages of testing and safety approvals.
The southwest extension promises to deliver an impressive increase in capacity, accommodating an extra 17,000 people per hour during peak periods. This will not only reduce travel times but also provide a more reliable and frequent service for commuters. For instance, a trip from Marrickville to Gadigal station in the city will be 12 minutes faster, and a journey from Lakemba to Victoria Cross in North Sydney will save a substantial 24 minutes.
However, the journey to this point has not been without its challenges. The project faced initial delays, with the former Coalition government estimating a closure period of three to six months in 2018. This was later extended, and the Minns government had to warn of potential delays beyond the initial estimate. The closure of the line in September 2024 further exacerbated the situation, causing commuters to endure the inconvenience of replacement buses.
Despite these setbacks, the current timeline suggests an October 18 opening date, which Premier Chris Minns describes as the 'home stretch'. This optimism is supported by confidential Sydney Metro documents, which outline a similar timeline. The testing phase, which includes end-to-end journeys, is crucial to ensuring the line's safety and reliability before it welcomes passengers.
As the final testing commences, passengers will continue to use the existing services between Tallawong and Sydenham, with trains arriving at Platform 2 at Sydenham.
